Waves was founded by Coach Sue Welker in 1999.

Fewer than 20 swimmers were expected at the first club orientation & practice but 45 showed up, and the club had 60 registered swimmers in its first year.

With her guidance, enthusiasm and hard work, the club grew over the years, reaching 200+ membership rapidly. During her tenure as head coach, NWSC won the 2004, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2014 Illinois Masters State Championships. Coach Sue's extensive knowledge of proper swimming technique, her drive to expand the frontiers of her swimmers, and her unfailing enthusiasm for her team and swimming made Naperville Waves a premier masters swim team in Illinois.

NWSC has gone on to win 2 more state championships, in 2022 and 2023.
